New York City: May Book Club

  • The LGBT Center 208 West 13th Street New York, NY, 10014 United States (map)

Our New York City group invites you to a special double-feature edition of the Build Out Alliance Book Club for an evening of storytelling and community reflection. We’ll be diving into two provocative works—Larry Mitchell’s gay manifesto The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions and Jordan Tannahill’s off-Broadway smash hit Prince Faggot—to discuss how we navigate power, patriarchy, and pride in our own lives and careers. Expect a vibrant dialogue that challenges the status quo and celebrates the beautiful "phatasmagoria" of our shared queer experience.

About The Book

The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions is a beloved queer utopian text written by Larry Mitchell with lush illustrations by Ned Asta, published by Calamus Press in 1977. Part-fable, part-manifesto, the book takes place in Ramrod, an empire in decline, and introduces us to the communities of the faggots, the women, the queens, the queer men, and the women who love women who are surviving the ways and world of men. Cherished by many over the four decades since its publication, The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions offers a trenchant critique of capitalism, assimilation, and patriarchy that is deeply relevant today.

In this metatheatrical tragicomedy, an ensemble of queer and trans performers cast themselves in a thought experiment, imagining the future heir to the British throne as having a life resembling their own. From one of Canada’s most acclaimed playwrights, Prince Faggot is a poppers-fuelled phantasmagoria interwoven with personal stories and ecstatic fantasies that reckons with how the forces of power, privilege, and colonization play upon queer lives.

About Book Club

The Build Out Alliance book club brings members of our community together, from avid readers to short-story dabblers, around many queer voices captured by the written word. Our meetings include open and honest conversations about each book, where we welcome all critiques and opinions. Many of these books are an opportunity to educate ourselves about queer history and identity, often linked to some of the most pressing issues we face today. Book Club’s range of selections intentionally promotes insight into a wide spectrum of topics, identities, and stories within the queer community.
